This is my first blog, and the first thing on my mine is...football. College football. I've been reading many articles from ESPN and other sports writers. All are in shock about the BCS bowls and how they were a bore.
Why would anyone expect Hawaii or Illinois to be a good team? Hawaii went undefeated in possibly the worst conference in Division 1A. Illinois faired somewhat in a half-decent conference that had a losing record in the post-season bowls.
So why did they go? Media hype. The media loves to tug at the heart strings of underdog this and underdog that, but if anyone has ever watched college football then they know that these two teams (along with Ohio St.) are terrible. Oh, there was that close game between Kansas and Virginia Tech, but who watched it? Not me.
The best game happened early Tuesday morning when Florida played Michigan. (Barely beating the other entertainingly close game Auburn vs. Clemson).
The rest were just bore games. The BCS fails yet again on having #1 and #2 playing each other. I believe Georgia and LSU should have played each other and then whoever won that game plays USC and THEN you have your champion.
This is the second time that a team has gone twice to the BCS championship and has been embarrassed when other deserving teams should go.
2003-04 season: Oklahoma loses their Conference Championship and still goes to the title game instead of USC and is somewhat embarrassed by LSU. But don't worry, USC and LSU share the title.
2004-05 season: Oklahoma goes again because they start the year off #2 (as usual) and are embarrassed by USC in the biggest marginal win. (It was almost beaten by Georgia and Hawaii but Hawaii pulled out a score at the end). Auburn should have gone. But they are not given a shared title. Only 13-0 team in history to never even share a title much less have one.
2006-07: Everyone was arguing if Michigan should have a rematch with Ohio St. or that Florida should play them. Florida was picked with many people saying Michigan was wronged. Florida then murders Ohio St.
2007-08: Again, Ohio St. is already going to the national championship game and everyone else is arguing for second when Ohio St. is once again embarrassed.
Too many problems in too few of years. I didn't even mention the Nebraska and Oregon St. ordeal five years ago. Media polls put the big name teams up top at the beginning of the season and all they need to do is not screw up while other teams need to have "style" points. "Style" points?
Playoffs are required ,pure and simple. If we went by the BCS rankings of the top 16, Ohio St. would have played Tennessee. I bet Tenn would have beaten Ohio St. and we all know Hawaii would have been ousted in the first round as well.
Talks of playoffs are going on among many conferences but the Pac-10 and the Big Ten (the losing conference in bowl games and with their national contender Ohio St. having lost over ten SEC games in a row) are saying they don't like even the talk of a plus 1 playoff.
It's ridiculous. Every division in football from peewee to the NFL have playoffs and every sport has it as well.
People (like John Saunders from ESPN) say that the season is the playoffs. How can that be considering that Ohio St. played no one important outside their conference and have gone to the national title game twice with no questions asked until AFTER they play.
I am a pure fan of college football. I don't care about polls, opinions, or anything like that. I only care about watching the games and the last good game I saw was on New Year's day that morning. The other "BIG 4" bowl games and the national title game were a huge let down.
I know what I have to say doesn't matter but it's good to get it out of my system.
I just hope that one day college football will care more about the game instead their wallets.
